CHILDREN’S ORTHODONTICS

We appreciate that embarking on a teeth straightening treatment is a big adjustment for younger patients, particularly those aged between 8 and 18. Their teeth are still growing, and they are facing big developmental milestones – so navigating braces and getting used to a new routine can be tricky.

Our children’s orthodontist in Putney will do everything she can to make sure your child’s experience is a positive one. Dr Annie use a variety of innovative treatment options and techniques to make sure the process is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible at every stage of their time with us. Feel free to contact our clinic for more information on our children’s orthodontic services or to ask our team for advice.

Types of children’s orthodontic treatment

Orthodontics has come a long way from the days of bulky metal braces! Today, there are several types of orthodontic treatments available, each designed to address specific dental issues and, of course, meet your preferences.

Interceptive orthodontics

Early assessment of children’s developing teeth can allow Dr Annie to identify any potential problems such as misaligned jaws, trapped teeth, habits such as thumb-sucking and other issues, which if addressed early may avoid more complicated treatment in future.

Dr Annie is a firm believer in the principle of selecting the correct treatment at the right time to allow the smoothest and shortest path to an excellent result. Interceptive orthodontics can take different forms depending on the situation, using fixed braces, removable braces and other appliances to apply the appropriate level of pressure to the teeth over time.

The advantages of interceptive treatment include:

  • Creating room for crowded and erupting teeth
  • Facilitating facial symmetry by influencing jaw growth
  • Decreasing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Maintaining space for un-erupted teeth
  • Decreasing the need for tooth removal
  • Reducing treatment duration with braces in future
  • Faster treatment

Early expansion

Expanders can be used to widen narrow jaws, allowing for developing adult teeth to erupt and helping to create space so these teeth can be accommodated in the arches. Dr Annie is experienced in the use of expanders in younger children and teenagers and will decide if they are the most appropriate treatment option following your comprehensive initial consultation.

Functional braces

Functional braces are designed to improve jaw alignment and realign teeth for children aged 11 to 14 years. They are worn over both the upper and lower teeth, and can be removable to allow for cleaning, contact sports and eating. Fixed versions are available, too.

This orthodontic treatment is often used in patients to improve jaw relationships. Functional braces help to match up upper and lower teeth, improving the patient’s ‘bite’ and projection of the front teeth.

  • There is a range of functional braces available for different scenarios. Dr Annie will guide you as to which is the most appropriate if they are necessary.
  • Functional braces have the best results when fitted to girls aged 11-13 and boys aged 12-14. In more severe cases, they can be fitted from 8 years upwards.

Removable braces

Dr Annie is an experienced user of removable braces, including the Invisalign™ system – visit our page for more information. As well as being popular with adults, Invisalign can be appropriate for children, with Invisalign First treatment, and also teenagers with Invisalign Teen. Dr Annie is experienced in all the different types of Invisalign and will be able to advise on this type of treatment.

Transparent, discreet and yet just as effective as their traditional bracketed counterparts, removable aligners can be a much more comfortable and attractive option for patients who want to remain in firm control of their treatment plan with added flexibility that complements their lifestyle.

  • Removable braces are harder to see than traditional fixed braces.
  • Being able to take the braces in and out at leisure makes it easier to eat, drink, and clean the teeth thoroughly – and they can be removed easily when playing contact sports.
  • The use of removable braces can reduce the complexity of orthodontic issues well in advance of beginning fixed braces. In some cases, this will lead to reduced treatment durations later on. Dr Annie will be able to advise you on the most suitable treatment path for your requirements.
